Tokyo Haneda to surpass Heathrow in traffic ranking

MONTREAL - London Heathrow switches spots with Tokyo Haneda in the 2024 ACI list of the world's busiest airport. The British Airways hub remained the biggest European airport by passenger numbers with 83.8 millions travellers last year. An airport in the United States is trailing Heathrow close behind.

108.0 million passengers: Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson, home to Delta Air Lines, kept its status as the busiest airport in 2024 followed by Dubai with 92.3 million and Dallas Fort Worth with 87.8 million passengers.

Heathrow lost its fourth place in the 2023 ranking to Tokyo Haneda - the Japanese airport clocked 85.9 million passengers through 2024.

The international airport organization ACI World released the numbers Monday. According to ACI World, global air traffic of 9.5 billion passengers surpassed pre-Covid numbers by four percent with nine percent growth from 2023.

Nine percent of this traffic was handled by the ten biggest airports. "Amid global challenges, the resilience of the world’s busiest airports shines," ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci said.

Right behind Heathrow, Denver Airport made the top ten list at 82.3 million passengers.
