LONDON - London Heathrow Airport tracks its "busiest December ever" - and ends 2024 with a new record of 83.9 million passengers. Strong growth rates in domestic, EU and Asia-Pacific traffic pushed the British Airways hub to new heights along with double digit increases in key international cargo markets.

Christmas and New Year raised the number of passengers travelling through Heathrow last month to over 7 million, "making it the busiest ever December" and bringing the total to 83.9 million passengers in 2024, Heathrow Airport disclosed in a statement Monday.

2024 passenger traffic marks a new record for the UK’s hub airport with 3 million more than the previous 2019 record. "On what is normally one of the quietest days for travel, Christmas Day also saw a record 160,000 passengers, a 13 percent increase on the previous record from 2023", the airport said.

Growth rates were driven by strong domestic demand and about 10 percent more passengers travelling inbound and outbound EU and Asia-Pacific.

"New York, LA, Dublin and Madrid were among the top destinations in 2024 for Heathrow passengers," the airport said. North America clocked about 20 million passengers at Heathrow, a 3.3 percent increase over 2023. The airport also saw cargo volumes rise by 10.4 percent, driven by North America and Asia-Pacific.

Investment push

"2024 was an exciting and a record-breaking year at Heathrow", Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said. The airport annouced infrastructure investments totalling 2.3 billion GBP for 2025 and 2026 in December.
