LONDON - Heathrow Airport faced major operational disruptions late Monday. According to media reports a hazardous materials alert caused an evacuation of Terminal 4. Emergency services were on site while flight operations at other Heathrow terminals continued. The alarm was called off soon after.

"Check-in at Terminal 4 has been closed”, a Heathrow spokesperson said late afternoon. The terminal handles European and far-distance services. Flight operations at the airport's other terminals continued as normal. According to unconfirmed reports, the evacuation was caused by a hazardous materials incident.

The alarm was called off later. "Emergency services have confirmed Terminal 4 is safe to reopen and we are doing everything we can to ensure all flights depart as planned today," Heathrow said.
